The Bachelorette, Jillian Harris last episode recap
After thinking about the last evening’s show for one day I have two words for Jillian Harris:
Why Jesse?
After watching all of the families and her connections, it seemed apparent that Jesse had that sort of connection with her that she is looking for. However, in love those things never make sense to us, and yes, “The heart wants what the heart wants.” Woody Allen said that. Never mind his story. This is Jillian’s the Canadian girl who has won the hearts of us Americans, while we are hoping she has the power to see through Wes’s sweet Southern accent and the obvious guys that aren’t right for her. How touching the break dancer was, Michael with his sweet departure. How lovely to find true vulnerability on screen for a change.
My favorite? Kip, Reid and Ed. Jillian really likes Ed and when it comes down to it, you should be with the person you really like, and not listen to what others think of your relationship. If you have found happiness in another’s arms and you have those ‘butterflies’ Jillie gets when she sees Ed, well, that’s all that’s left at the end of a hard working day. When you lay your head down at night you want to feel the security of your heart still feeling the effects of love even after the honeymoon has faded. Ed has this effect on Jillie and I guess Jesse did not. I am sure after his exposure on ABC, Jesse will find some lovely bride under the stars in Carmel Valley, California.
And Kip? Well, he has that look of the So CAl guy I like those that have that ‘air of sophistication’ and confidence that could almost seem to laid back for a girl like Jillian. At heart our lovely bachelorette, Jillian Harris is a small town girl, hence her draw to Wes and his guitar. I had a thing for cowboys once, too. The image of George Straight singing in the 90′s inspired me many nights to believe there was some man in my future that would give me ‘butterflies’, too.
Was it fair that Ed came back? No, but when has life ever dealt anyone that fairness? Life is a game. There is no right or wrong choice…Why I like Jillian Harris so much is if she is going to ‘get burned’ she wants to do it following her own heart (basically her own words from the last show). I, too, am a creature like Jillian Harris who has at fault followed my heart over logic or the obvious, which the viewers can plainly see while she is trying to figure out her own puzzle in life. Yes, Jillian Harris, follow your heart, do what you must, if you choose the player in the end, well at least you loved wretchedly in the best way possible. You did it ‘your way’ and didn’t let ‘snakes’ like the like of that Pilot guy that thought he was perfect. Those that seek perfection rarely find it and those that seek to help, while hurting usually end up crying over a railing in a hotel somewhere in Austin, Texas. Go back to flying airplaness and make some other girls cry.
“Doing the right thing” has nothing to do with “BEING THE BEARER OF BAD NEWS.” Sometimes we make plans and life changes without seeing the cue cards. Obviously the Pilot guy needs to realize his own flaws.
And Wes? Well, the guy is charming as all ‘GET OUT’ as they say back in the Midwest and you can’t blame Jillian Harris for being so gullable to that kind of guy.
Let’s just hope that Ed can reel his woman back in before it’s too late and ABC stops pulling at poor Jillian Harris’s heart strings. Yes, it’s a reality show, but she is real and she is on the hunt for TRUE LOVE.
And, at the end of the day, whether any of would like to admit it or not, that is what we all want. A home, a safety net and man you can believe in. I just hope at the end of the show that Jillian can follow her heart all the way…and even if that means she loses in the end.
At least she has loved than never loved at all.
Yes, one of those totally romantic types that still believes that there are some men worth marrying, some men worth loving and some men that aren’t just all pigs. There are those just like us women who just after all want to ‘go home’ after journeying so long down a path of singledom
There are some men that are ‘keepers, friends, and maybe just maybe stay close to the corners of your soul.’
Good luck Jillian Harris, you have a fan in me by your sweet, endearing qualities.
Cheers to your found success and a journey that you shall never forget.

My Bridal Shower
The thing about life is you must have fun. My Dad has always said that I was good at this. However, I actually learned from him. What’s wonderful about this short to long time here on earth is the journey of it all, the friends we make and the many chapter of different memories we take with us as our lives keep changing. I am here looking at the last ten years of my life here in San Diego and they have been so blessed. I am one of those rare women who would prefer many many girlfriends as opposed to one. I can’t get enough of meeting new and exciting individuals and because of it, I’ve been blessed with many different friendships along the way.
Kudos to all of them here. Kudos to your love and time. You have made me feel extra loved on one day I will always remember. To find the prince sometimes takes some effort, but with a little help from your girlie girls anything is possible. Ask me, I know.
And, Melissa Williams, I love you for making this day so wonderful, for hosting this event for me and for your fun beautiful spirit that makes my life a sweeter place.
With all of my love,
Machel
Why I Still believe in ‘Mr. Big’.
I am getting married in the month of July. I have had many different emotions about this event. I have had moments where I have wondered about the overall idea of marriage and if this is the right thing. Don’t think because of my mate, but because of the concept of marriage.
I guess basically my theory is the only reason two people should ever get married is if they can’t live without each other or they want to spend the rest of their life looking at that particular face. I have a thing with faces. I believe there are many meanings behind the shapes of someone’s eyes, their smile and the way they look longingly into your soul. You can see so much when you take a peek, you know that deep look where you look past the surface and you see so much more than just the obvious?
I have lived long enough to know that true love does take a lifetime and to find a mate that is compatible in a social and living environment is difficult. So at a certain point a woman must do the plus and minus checks and so must a man. I wake up each day to find a new moment and I am so thankful for this very life that I have. I try to remember the tragic events that I hear about each day, like the plane that disappeared on the way to Paris this week from Brazil, so I never take my miseries for granted. It just takes my breath away to hear about things like that. One moment up in the sky and the next life is over.
We never know what our future holds. We plan, we dream, we make each step happen carefully or whimsically, depending on our nature, but in the end we cannot predict what will happen to us. So, what is my advice to anyone with a significant other? Wrap it up before you lose them. You may always think there is another someone around the next corner. However, the truth is that is not always the case. Life is not a gamble. Life is what you make happen. “Make something happen.” This was a line in one of my favorite Luanne Rice novels, “Summer Light.” In this novel, the main character is at a crossroads and her friend gives her that simple advice.
Sometimes we must move the dirt beneath us to see the change in the world we want. It does not always come to us and the next best option might be taken. In a society where text messaging and social networking have truly changed the way we live, one must remember to be thankful for those that love you and care so deeply for your soul. One must never take for granted those that might be right in front us. They could be the one!
Ask me, I know. After all, your best friend can’t always be the same sex, like a “Sex in the City” episode with Carrie Bradshaw and her best friends. Sometimes “Mr.
Big” is the reason we try a bit harder, look prettier and hope that we might just capture that prince’s heart. And, in the end that is exactly what this fictional character does, too.
Life is not about happily ever after. It’s about having the courage to follow your heart and believe in miracles. Be thankful for those that love you. I know I tend to have that sappy Hallmark greeting card approach to writing, but someone has got to do it. Promote love, faith and sweetness. Be good and watch this world open its arms to now and your future.
Around town
On June 2, the Red Sox won the Rancho Santa Fe Little League Championship against the Yankees team. How exciting to see the smiles on the faces of those boys. Congratulations to all of the boys who worked hard and played ball this school year. The Yankees team celebrated the season with a trophy ceremony as well. How exciting for all of the parents there to see their boys beaming with pride.
On June 9, The Shangri Pa charity event finally arrived. Helen Woodward raised more than $385,000 dollars, which goes to help saving many animals’ lives and enriching the lives of children that need help through their successful animal therapy program. The volunteers arrived early that Saturday morning to set up all day for this black tie affair. When guests arrived, they enjoyed bidding on a fabulous silent auction, a live auction, plus sampling food from 22 of San Diego’s finest restaurants. Then the guests danced ‘till midnight under the stars at the Fairbanks Plaza.
Julie Watkins, Renee Resko, Katie Shull and Laurel McCrink were all in charge of making this wonderful event possible.
My highlight of the night was running into Natalie Shull. She also volunteered all day for this event. Now this was definitely a night to remember for me and all of the guests that attended.
Later that evening, I ran into Shanna Pizzino and James McCoy at Flight restaurant. If you haven’t heard the news, let me be the first to tell you. Flight the new name of Pasquale’s/Steve Finley Lounge. Think fun dancing and hip up-to-date disco music here.
If you are looking for a place close to the Ranch, this is about as good as it gets! Thanks for letting me snap this quick photo at Flight.
On June 7, well-known realtor Elaine Gallagher shared with me the fabulous news that her son Michael Gallagher is a hit sensation on You Tube. His comedy sketch, “Blame it on the Economy” has had more than 1 million views. If you would like to check out his Internet show, go to www.totallysketch.com. How exciting to have a celebrity here in town. Thanks for keeping me in the loop Elaine.
On June 9, one of my favorite women walking the planet, Patricia Saverese, shared this news around town with me: Pat Hemingway-Savarese, owner of Phoenix Pro
Public Relations, was invited to accompany Mrs. Charles Whittingham to Hollywood Park Race Track on June 6, for the Running of the Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap in honor of her deceased husband. Charles Whittingham and rider William Shoemaker were an unbeatable team. Charles Whittingham, aptly nicknamed “The Bald Eagle,” was a leading money winning trainer in Thoroughbred Racing for many years. His death was an end to an era. “The Whittingham family and I have been friends for 40 years and it was my honor to accompany Peggy to this prestigious event,” Savarese said. Mrs. Whittingham was also joined by her daughter Charlene, son-in-law and thoroughbred veterinarian Helmuth Von Blucher, grand daughter Ilona and great grand daughter Charlie, who is named after her legendary greatgrand father.”

On June 10, I attended the Delicias Realtor pitch session. The last few weeks have been more encouraging regarding the real estate market. Homes are selling in the Ranch and peoples are starting to take advantage of the low market prices. Michael Citron shared with me a limerick he wrote and delivered for that Wednesday. Here are his creative words.
There once was a home on Santa Victoria
It is ready for a family to say “I adore ya,”
With a pool, spa and bbq station
It will, for sure, bring your buyers to elation.
Come today, from 1 to 4, for Open House preview, Broker Tour.
I will greet you at the door and show you that this home really has more.
We’ve got over 2,800 square feet and although I’m not serving anything to eat,
I’m giving away $2 bills as a treat
I’ll see you today at Santa Victoria and have you leave with financial euphoria.” Thanks Michael for sharing this with my column. Why Jillian Harris Rocks as the Bachelorette
What sets Jillian Harris apart and why she won this role on ABC’s hottest reality show is why??
Because she is true blue, good to the bone and has a heart. How refreshing to see a ‘down to earth’ beautiful vivacious girl instead of the stereo typical wannabes. Jillian isn’t afraid to be tough, to show her heart or be brutally honest. I predict Kip to be one of the top guys. I think Juan received a bad rep from some jealous younger guys intimidated by good-looking 30 year old. Wes is definitely there for the wrong reasons and I hope Jillian actually finds happiness with someone. Even if she doesn’t, she has at least touched my heart here in San Diego. Good luck, believe and I can’t wait to see the final rose. At this point the only one that seems genuine is Kipton from Encinitas, CA.
Next week looks like a cliffhanger…Could it be that one cowboy might be singing his last song? I wonder what the dialogue is between Molly and Jason as they tune in each Monday to watch Jillian light up the screen. And, we’ll never know if Molly regretted accepting the switcharoo knowing she could have these hot 30 men. MMMM. I’m thinking, yes, maybe regret might be hiding in the corners of her Monday nights with Jason.
Jillian, go get your man and invite me to Canada!

Hollywood meet the Ranch, plus Does money buy happiness?

“Does money buy you happiness?” We live in a town where the trees shed their leaves four times and then they die. The roots do not find the earth inward, only underneath the shallowness of the grass directly below. When the Santa Ana’s blow forth bringing dry weather and hot winds, I begin to wonder about the weather, eucalyptus trees, and the saneness of people in Southern California. This weekend someone I overheard someone say, “Money can buy you happiness.” This statement was made, while this person was a guest a fantastic home in Rancho Pacifica. I had one of those moments, which inspired me to contemplate this proverbial theory that so many believed to be true. One of my favorite authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald fictionalized why this statement is so desperately wrong. The classic novel, “The Great Gatsby”, delves into the lives of the rich in famous during the roaring 1920′s era. Let me give you a quick re-cap of this classic novel, which I’m sure you read in high school: GATSBY fell in love with Daisy. Daisy was rich and came from money. Gatsby did not. With enough effort and shady connections, he found away to make money to win Daisy’s love. Gatsby plotted and planned and even hosted elaborate parties on Long Island’s North Shore. In the end, he was just a ‘bootlegger’ and Daisy was unattainable. Do you remember the ending? Gatsby loved Daisy so much he covered up a hit and run accident, which resulted in the death of Daisy’s husband’s lover, while she exited town unscathed by any scandal. Meanwhile, Gatsby was murdered for her mistake…I’m sure when Gatsby set out on his whole “Let’s win back Daisy scheme” he had no idea that his demise would come from his mission to find great happiness while hording lots of cash just to garner Daisy’s attention. In truly analyzing this book, the point was that Gatsby’s love was pure in some sweet honorable way. Gatsby lacked selfish motives, other than to get the girl in the end. That is what made the story fabulous. True love can be flawed, too. So…who says money can’t buy you happiness? Well, F. Scott Fitzgerald. A very wealthy man himself, he fictionalized this universal theme in most of his novels. Look to the great minds to find great pearls of wisdom. They say at a funeral you can judge a person’s life by attendance of friends and loved ones. At Gatsby’s memorial, there were only two individuals there. What happened to all of the fair weather friends and his love, Daisy? In this classic novel is the answer to why this theory, “Money can buy you happiness” doesn’t even measure up in the Millennium. During a time when money seems more elusive than even a few years ago, we must remember the tale of Gatsby. We must remember that just because someone else has more than us, does not always correlate with happiness. Happiness is a fleeting emotion that cannot be bought in a store or in a form of a hand bag. We must remember to find peace of mind in our own hearts. Now more than ever, when we analyze what others have behind their white picket fences, it may seem that the elegant landscaped lawns set against the transported eucalyptus trees, that money could be the answer to solving your worries. Just know that in the end, we are remembered by our friends and by those lives we’ve touched—not what we have in our bank account. After all, “You can’t take it with you”. Oops, now that’s a famous Frank Capra movie. I do believe I mixing the genres… Around Town On March 21st, Rancho Santa Fe Little League celebrated Opening Day at Richard’s field. Family and teammates attended this fun-filled tradition of one of the best leagues in North County. Professional Baseball pitcher, Jim Abbot inpired the crowd with his own inspirational story of how he became a majoy league player, while overcome the fact he was born without a right hand. Abbot’s accolade’s include the Sullivan award in 1987 and throwing a no-hitter with the Yankees against Cleveland. He played 10 years in the majors with four different clubs. Ben Stout, John Scheckengaust, and Tyler Miller beamed with pride when they stood next to Mr. Abbot. Thank-you to Todd Stout, my son’s baseball coach for sharing his pictures in my column. Now can you say…play ball! On March 22nd, I met an out-of-towner, designer–Kenny Davis, walking around in downtown Rancho Santa Fe. Mr. Davis was with his sister, Shauna Aronson seeking design inspiration from the Tuscany homes in the Ranch for set decorations in Hollywood. Kenny Davis has designed with such celebrities as Paris Hilton, P Diddy, Fifty-Cents, plus designed numoruous television shows. How thrilled I was to hang out with a designer from Los Angeles. He informed me that a Reality Design Show is in the works right now, which would feature his creations from Hamptons, Los Angeles, and New York City. Watch out Martha Stewart, it looks like you have some new competition. He is giving me the exclusive scoop on what’s next in his exciting career, until then, stay tuned. On March 27th, I heard from Rancho Realtor, Debi Holder. Her son, Andrew Holder, a recent graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasedena-celebrated a showing of his artwork in downtown little Italy. Debi’s son has built up a steady clientele, which includes the Roxy, Poketo, National Geographic, and Arkitrip Magazine. “His work has a hint of Scandinavian folk-art with a modern-day twist,” according to Debi. Imagine Sleepy seaside towns, and country landscapes…these are his prominent pieces. If you would like to find out more about this local budding artist, go to www.andrewholder.net for more information on his artwork. Later that evening, I ran into a fun group celebrating a new business merger. The owner of “A Better Way Wholesale Auto”, Brian Lee was in the Ranch with friends, Camille Stewart, Wendy Deno and Mike Fascetti. In a time when speculation about the car business is sour, Brian has already had great success with his new dealership located in Miramar. Originally from Connecticut, he recently relocated with his family to Southern California. I wonder if it had anything to do with our glorious weather? If you are looking for a ‘slightly used luxury car’, check out www.abwwa.com or call 858… . On March 28th, Lisa Saputo organized a wonderful event at the Del Rayo Shopping Center called, “Lifestyles in the Ranch” Talk live, featuring KUSI’s Leonard Simpson. This event incorporated retailers and restaurants, promoting all of the stores in Fairbanks. The highlights included an interactive fashion show, featuring complimentary makeovers, style tips, fitness and food, with live models on stage. Proceeds raised from the raffle drawing were donated to “Child-help” at Rady’s Children’s Hospital, and the Center for Children. Kudos to Lisa Saputo for organizing a way to promote our local businesses in town that might need that extra boost and most importantly raising money for children’s charities. What you may not know about Lisa is that she is good friend’s with Melissa Williams and is available to help your organization. Call Lisa at 619… if you would like her to promote an upcoming event. SAVE THE DATE Coming up is the fabulous Celebrity Classics Golf Tournament April 23-26 located at Morgan Rung Golf Resort. If you love meeting your favorite Sport Celebrities, this will be your chance to meet them. NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB sports stars, as well as stars from television, music and movie stars will be in town this weekend. This is one of my favorite events of the year. Back in 2002 I was lucky enough to play golf with these guys and have a weekend to always remember. Don’t miss this big event. For more information check out www.ismsports.net. If you have any event you would like Machel Penn to cover, you can contact her at mpenn@coastnewsgroup.com.
