Baking Proves good for the Soul

I’m not really one

to rant on something. Originally, I had submitted a different story for my column. What I had sent in was an opinion on “zip code snobbery,” which I’m sure none of you are really concerned about.

Sometimes sleeping on it is exactly what everyone needs to do. After reading it the next morning, I decided if someone wants to feel better about their zip code, what’s so terrible about that? You work hard, you slave, and if where you live makes you feel better about tackling this life, by all means indulge in those feelings. What makes more sense to share is what I recently discovered: I love to bake cakes.

When I went home to my sister’s wedding, I baked a whopping 9 cakes in a two week stretch. I blissfully slaved away mixing and frosting cakes for many hours with a smile just plastered across my face. Yes, I know…I’ve thought about it. I may be having an early mid-life crisis. Mine just happens to be in the form of baking.

Last week I even offered to make the cake for a bridal shower for my in-laws. I think my husband’s family seemed surprised that I had volunteered for this most important task. I have, after all been with them for almost three years. Their daughter-in-law by marriage for one year, and never once I have I offered to bake a cake. I think that seemed rather odd to them. I’ve made salads, or brought side dishes or offered to pick up a pie. But never once have I offered to bake something.

With much delight, they said yes to my request. So imagine me baking a double layer white cake with strawberry rhubarb cheesecake filling. I made the decadent butter cream frosting. You might be wondering if I have ever made this recipe before.

No.

Just whipped it up out of thin air, like I had been doing it most of my life. Of course, I did receive a couple of important tips from my sister. She helped me narrow down my idea of how to make the rhubarb strawberry filling. How is it that I have now only discovered my love for making sugary white frosting, beating eggs and decorating cakes in my late thirties?

That’s part of the mystery in our journey. We must unearth those simple pleasures that add meaning to our daily routine. Baking cakes just make me smile. What brings joy to your day? Do yourself a favor. Try to find something new that lights your soul on fire. You might be surprised at how much a new hobby can turn an ordinary day into something that feels magnificent. Life is more about the small pleasures that are within our reach. The trick is to discover what they are along the way.

Around town

On July 28, I was invited to a fabulous event at Fixtures Living. Live entertainment, incredible fresh organic foods were cooked on state of the art appliances, while guests mingled and admired the enormous warehouse of fixtures for modest to luxury homes. Rancho Santa Fe Realtor Tammy Tidmore was kind enough to include me on this guest list. Except for the drive in rush hour traffic to Miramar road, the evening was lovely. SDAR partnered with other professional realtors in the San Diego area to bring this event together. Featured here is Tammy Tidmore, with one of the owners of Fixtures Living, Jeffery Sears.

On July 30, Elaine Gallagher celebrated her birthday with many of her good friends at the luxurious turf club at the Del Mar Racetrack. You may know Elaine as one of the prettiest blondes in town, or from the Gallagher & Gallagher real estate team. I spotted Elaine one day in her gorgeous black Bentley in the Ranch, and she looked like a movie star straight out of Hollywood. Featured here with Elaine at her birthday party are Carmen O’Riordan, Shannon Glascione, Audrey Goldshmidt, Kathy Herington, the birthday girl, Christine, Jen, Christine, Lisa Norton and Kelly Baldwin. Thanks Elaine for sharing your special day with me.

On Aug. 1, Rancho Santa Fe resident Dottie McCrink hosted a bridal shower for her granddaughter Molly McCrink. Molly will be getting married this fall in Cabo San Lucas to Walter Beringer. Molly currently resides in Seattle. She flew in for this special occasion. Natalie Shull helped organize the wonderful shower for her cousin. I was thrilled to bake a white cake with strawberry rhubarb cheesecake filling, glazed in butter cream icing. The day was absolutely splendid. After croissant chicken sandwiches, and other finger delights, the guests of Molly’s shower competed to see who could make the best bridal dress out of one role of toilet paper. I have included three fun photos from Dottie McCrink’s wonderful bridal shower for Molly that day. Dottie’s sister, Caroline Fleischman, is featured with Mina McCrink. Featured also are Natalie and Katie Shull, Dottie McCrink, Mary Murphy McCrink and the bride-to-be, Molly McCrink. Dottie and Ed McCrink have been Ranch residents for over 40 years.

Paperback Novels and the institution of Marriage-”Machel’s Ranch,” The Rancho Santa Fe News

  • Posted on August 1, 2010 at 10:22 pm

I’m a book fanatic. Some people are proud of their iPad. I’m proud of my pile of books sitting in a basket next to my bed. I have a photo on the cover of my phone that reads, “Happiness is a cup of coffee and a good book.” My husband keeps telling me that at some point books will all be online and there will be no need to go to a bookstore. Huh?

My forehead crinkles with a look that is sure to send me in for the latest Botox injection, except then I remember I don’t believe in botulism being anywhere within the confines of my skin. I try to explain to him with my eyebrows arched to avoid the inevitable onslaught of wrinkles the importance of actually feeling the book in your hand. I plead my case. You know the texture, the beautiful cover and all of those wonderful words in-between. There is something to be said regarding the way a book just feels in your hands. I tell him I know I will never experience that by focusing on some small digital screen to read my favorite author’s latest novel. We end the conversation with his words of reassuring facts, “Like it or not, that’s where the future his headed.”

Well. That’s a sure way to exhume my wonderful mood for the weekend. I stare out my bedroom window trying to imagine the future without paper-filled books. Then I wonder, “Could I live in a world without books?” The thought of that makes my stomach churn. There is something to be said about lounging in bed with your favorite book as the world carries on outside without you, which leads me to a must-share novel for summer for you to read.

“Recipes for the Perfect Marriage,” by Morag Prunty (also goes by Kate Kerrigan). The novel is set in New York City and is about 39-year-old food critic Tressa Nolan. You find out that Tressa is recently married and is beginning to wonder, “Who is the man sleeping next to me in my bed?” You find out through the first person narrative that the main character is quickly having second thoughts and wonders what possessed her into this union of marriage? Was it age? Desperation, or could it be that she is actually in love?

The parallel story in the novel is the love story of her grandmother, whose marriage Tressa thinks is perfect. As you read the current love story set in New York and the flashback love story of Tressa’s grandparents, you as the reader will discover what true love is really all about. Through the author’s examples of trials and problems in each relationship, Morag Prunty deftly depicts why marriage is still a wonderful institution in the millennium. With much wit and enthusiasm, Morag tells one of the best love stories I have read in awhile. Now in my top 10 books, it is a must-read for every woman on the planet that still believes in those two lovely words, “I do.”

Maybe marriage and books are becoming a thing from the past. But take it from an old fashioned romantic: Keep reading paperback books and believe in the possibility that technology can’t take the place of everything this life has to offer, including a real body lying next to you in bed.

Around Town

On July 8, I was invited to the Nicole Miller/Mister B Fashion Show held at Mille Fleurs by Denise Hug. How wonderful to receive the invite. The event included a sit-down luncheon, while models wore the latest women’s and men’s apparel in Southern California. The newest jewelry designer to move into Rancho Santa Fe was also there, Martin Katz. I captured two lovely photos that day of Denise Hug with Corky Miser, owner of Corky’s Pest Control. He just happens to good friends with Bertrand Hug, Denise’s husband. Also featured here is Julien Hug with Maggie Bobileff. Julien was one of the male models in the fashion show. Thank you, Denise for the invitation. I wish I could have stayed for the entire event, but paper duties never end.

On July 17, I was thrilled to attend Karian Forsyth’s birthday party with my husband, which was hosted by her husband Tom Forsyth. The valets parked the car, and the cocktail waitress brought the wine and the appetizers to all of the guests sipping wine under the stars. Denise Hug and Bertrand Hug, Jennifer Bell and singer Sacha Boutros were some of the guests on the private guest list.

I wore a baby doll-Goldie Hawn looking dress, which reminded me of that show “Laugh-In” from the 1960s. My husband had bought a pair of beautiful stiletto heels that made me at least 6-feet-two-inches tall that night. Luckily, I didn’t trip that evening like I have been known to do on occasion. Featured here in the photo are two friends of Karian’s from Los Angeles, Johnny and Dawn. They made the special trip just for their good friend Karian. Karian was wearing svelte black velvety dress with a sexy zipper in the back. Tom was a wonderful host and the evening was just splendid. I always love going to their parties!

On July 19, many things happened. First, I interviewed well-known author Doris Lee McCoy regarding her new book, “The Magic of Gross National Happiness.” I have met Doris in person. She truly has the face of an angel. Sweet and sincere, her positivity glows from within. “Did you know happiness can be measured?” This is the opening line on her website. I wanted to get to the bottom of what exactly that means. Doris explained to me that she went to the Himalayas to do extensive research on a small village, Bhutan, to see how exactly it was possible that they could be ranked No. 8 in the world in happiness when the average villager only made less than $1,200 a year. With 76 percent of the village surrounded in trees, Doris thought this factor also contributed to their natural happiness factor. Also, the village itself is concerned more for the well-being of its residents than just what’s in their bank account (if they have bank accounts in Bhutan!). Doris found the “simplicity” to their way of life contributed significantly to their well-being. Featured here is author Doris Lee McCoy with Bhutan Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. If you would like to buy one of her books, visit www.dorisleemccoy.com to find out more about her fascinating discoveries. She will be having a book signing soon in Rancho Santa Fe. Go to her website to find out more details.

Later that afternoon, I attended the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary meeting with Krista Lafferty. Who knew, but the legendary Chubby Checker was the featured speaker for that day? Wow. I was so excited. Mr. Checker was in town to help Irene with her charity event later that evening at the Valenti estate. Everyone was sitting on the edge of their chair as Mr. Checker reminisced about his career. He informed the packed room how his mother had a prophetic dream regarding his music career and how Dick Clark coined “Chubby as Chubby Checker” and that’s how he received his name. After the meeting, I snapped a few photos of this legendary rock star, and he asked me to jump in for one of the pictures. As you can see, I look like a giddy schoolgirl that knew she was in the company of greatness. Thanks so much for the great photo Chubby, Irene and Patrick. I felt so lucky all day.

That evening, one of my best friends Meredith MacDonald came over to watch ABC’s “The Bachelorette.” She had heard that I had been baking, so she asked me to make her a cake for that evening. But of course, anything for my friends. Featured here is Meredith holding the cake from that evening. If you are wondering, it was a butter cream spice cake with a secret ingredient that cuts out many carbs and cholesterol. I will soon be selling these goodies on the weekends at my husband’s Lemon Twist, which is located near the Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe. I will fill you in later on that wonderful new detail developing in my life.

Summer Hat Feature

Deana Carter looks elegant in her Opening Day hat, which she modeled for me for this photograph. I ran into Deana and her husband John at some of the after party festivities in the Ranch. Thanks Deana for letting me feature you for this week summer hat feature.

My frank thoughts for this week’s column, “Machel’s Ranch.” Rancho Santa Fe News.

  • Posted on July 17, 2010 at 9:31 am

I don’t have anything to write this week. It’s a first. I am sitting here staring at a blank page with nothing materializing. That’s rare when that happens. Usually, I’m brimming with ideas, stories that my heart seems it must reveal in my next column. This week? Nothing is coming to me, except just to be honest with my readers.

I was thinking about a few things while I was relaxing on a two-week vacation. Some ideas that seemed rather important to share, or rather lessons I am still learning myself.

I’ve been thinking that there are many signs in this world. I don’t think most us pay attention to the immediate ones, and we miss obvious moments that are ours to create. I’m not talking about road signs. I’m talking about signs from up above that validate our journey, or rather give us direction when we need it.

Another thing I’ve been thinking about is have you ever noticed the more favors you give the more others expect from you in return? What is up with that? I am learning to be more sparing with my favors. I have learned to say “No.” If you can’t be there, just say no and don’t overextend yourself. I’m sure your calendar is already full. Take this advice from someone who usually commits herself with too many stories. Choose sparingly. Don’t become overwhelmed with a schedule when life is really meant to be simplified (do think Forrest Gump here).

Drink tea instead of espresso.

I’ve also been thinking how much I just absolutely love life, and how blessed I am to be here with all of my friends and loved ones. I just have been so grateful lately for what I have instead of hoping for more. Guess what? I find there is less to complain about. We sometimes miss out on great moments because we are busy wanting more. “Be grateful for less and you won’t miss the rest.” I just coined that phrase even if it sounded a bit cliché.

The main thing is, take some time out of your life to watch “Seinfeld.” Yes, that’s right. Or your favorite comedy that just makes you belt out a really deep laugh. I hear that sort of laughter fights off cancer. I hear it heals just about everything. So make sure you take some time to laugh.

Loosen up a bit and stop taking everything so seriously. The world will survive if you do happen to make a mistake. Everything is not resting upon your shoulders. Be at one place at a time. Dare to inspect the beauty in a single blade of grass while you are in a rush to your next appointment.

Stop spending so much time on your cell phone. Learn to be with yourself alone and your idle thoughts in the car instead. Then listen to some amazing music that inspires your mood. We don’t always have to be hooked to our iPhone. Have the courage to be without the latest gadget.

And, I shall end with this: Don’t make yourself too available. Don’t always say yes. Learn to be quiet. Learn to smile. Learn to be nice. Learn to say the words, “I love you more,” and don’t forget to tell your parents they are the greatest in the world. After all, they did give you life. It’s nice to be back under the eucalyptus trees. I missed you, Rancho Santa Fe.

Out of town

(Please note, for the last two weeks I have been gone from Rancho Santa Fe and this Around Town is featured in Spirit Lake, Iowa).

On June 23, My husband, Jackson and I drove to the Amtrak station to catch my 6:45 a.m. train to Los Angeles. The night before, I suddenly wondered if it were actually possible to make the train, the shuttle to LAX and board the plane all on in one day. Then I realized, yes, trains are always on time. So you can just see my expression when another passenger informed me that there had been a homicide on the train tracks only a few hours earlier. What a bad omen, I thought (I’m a little superstitious). I asked him, “You’re kidding right?” I envisioned a crew like the “CSI: Miami: forensic team somewhere down the tracks completing their investigation, while hundreds of travelers were stranded at the train stations. What ended up happening was I took Robin home, then jumped on the freeway, and drove to the airport. Later, it was determined that a man was just hit by a train and the homicide theory was ruled out.

If you are wondering, we did make the plane. An odd sense of relief came over me as I held my son’s hand, while we ascended and disappeared into the white clouds.

On June 24, I woke up at my parents’ house feeling quite pleased to be on vacation. I hadn’t been back to the Midwest during the summer in almost five years. Let me set the record straight on Iowa because I know what you are thinking. You are thinking miles of corn and how boring. Yes, normally that would be right, except where my family lives. Spirit Lake and Lake Okoboji is sort of like the “Aspen of Iowa,” but in reverse. Just like Aspen in the wintertime, Spirit Lake has more than 250,000 tourists a year visit its breathtaking natural lakes during the summer. After being a native Californian (Ha!) for 21 years, I still am proud to be from the Midwest. It’s quite pleasant to see natural green grass grow without the need of irrigation or a pack of gardeners attending to manicured lawns. It’s wonderful to breathe in fresh air, and enjoy natural beauty outside of a semi-arid desert. Think “Norman Rockwell” here. Spirit Lake has this pristine quality that leads you to believe maybe you don’t have a care in the world. I snapped a cute photo of my brother Billy and Jessica with their youngest son, Henry, on my first day. I love my brother!

On June 25, I attended my sister’s bachelorette party with my niece Lauren Chapman and my soon-to-be-step-niece Mia Howard. We all went to Barefoot Bar to meet my sister with her other close friends to help celebrate her betrothal to J.D. Howard. Before we left, I captured a photo of the bachelor party guys, Steven and J.D. Howard, with my uncle Timothy and my brother Billy Penn. We had so much fun that evening. However, while my sister unwrapped her lingerie and naught presents, something wicked was brewing up just on the other side of the lake. Can you say tornado? After leaving the Midwest at the age of 18, I still have a tremendous fear of those deadly twisters. This truly had my heart racing. We had to relocate to a Mexican restaurant because the dark front was moving fast across the lake with bolts of lightening flashing across the sky. Once I was with tequila in hand, I felt somewhat more relaxed. That was, until the lights went out there, too. OK, I have to admit, I did scream out loud in the brief moment of terror. After huddling inside the restroom, the party resumed. Let’s just say when the hail and the wind and lightening subsided, we rushed home as fast as we could. Well, I had them take me home, and their party continued on, without me.

On June 26, I woke up and realized today my sister is getting married … and I must wear a salmon-colored dress. Yes, that’s right, salmon, but sort of rosy salmon. I must say the color was better than I thought. And, quite honestly, I would wear a gunny-sack for Tracy. She rocks. First thing my sister and I did was make the floral arrangements. I helped her in the restroom downstairs strip all of the thorns from the roses. Two

sisters together, what fun! We tied them together with beautiful ribbon, and made the most beautiful bouquets. A few hours later, I drove to the most beautiful B&B. There we relaxed together in her big suite as we waited for time to trickle away. At 5:35 p.m., my sister Tracy married J.D. Howard on the Lake of Okoboj. And, luckily for all of us, there were clear skies. I have included a few photos from that day here.

Later that evening, the reception took place at my parents’ home. For awhile, the weather felt wonderful. Tracy and J.D. danced. The in-laws did, too. Everything was going smoothly until, yes, you guessed it, another tornado was spotted only five miles away. Everyone took cover in the basement. Luckily, it’s a tri-level house where the basement is really quite luxurious. So imagine everyone in comfort. Think carpet, not concrete floors. I ended up rushing upstairs with my camera to document these wild new developments on the front porch. How could I resist? The video captured the ominous dark clouds passing over the lake. No worries, the storm moved over Spirit Lake. And, the reception turned into a night to remember for all of us. I have included a gorgeous photo of Micky Kay and William Ray Penn (my parents). They graciously hosted the reception and were just beaming with pride for their eldest daughter that day. There is also a photo here of myself with my two siblings with their significant others just after the storm had passed.

On June 28, I baked my first cake! I have made cookies, and other sweet breads and brownies and pies, too. But never in my life have I baked a cake. It’s funny how you can learn new things on vacation. I discovered I love to bake. I ended up baking seven cakes, plus my sister’s birthday cake later that week, too. Let’s just say it was a week of celebrating of my sister, which she truly deserved. Later, I will write a feature on some wonderful substitutes I discovered, to help reduce the fat and calories.

On July 3, I returned home. I boarded my plane, said goodbye to my family. My mother stood at the security checkout and waved goodbye, while Jackson and I disappeared as we headed to our gate, back into our regular lives in California. Did I mention yet that I love my family? Thanks for reading my “Around Town” that just happened to be out of town for just one issue.

My son woke up last night and climbed in bed with me because he had a scary dream about a spider. He dreamt the spider had fallen from the ceiling onto his chest as he was lying in bed. Frightened, he ran into my room seeking comfort. However, what had bothered him the most was he couldn’t remember if the spider had bitten him before the nightmare had ended.

I allowed him to climb in bed — just like I’m sure other mothers would — and we tried to ward off this terrible evil in his dream. As I turned on the light, I remembered some references in a dream interpretation book. A spider represents a good omen and is synonymous with the number eight, which is supposedly linked to success. With my son still visibly upset, I knew I must begin to spin my own story about the spider right before Halloween.

“Jackson, the dream was not a nightmare. The spider represented the power of eight in your life and your birthday — April 8. And the spider did not bite you. Rather you were able to stop the accident before it occurred.”

In the middle of the night, I laid out an analogy of the nasty dream. As I spun my own web of positive perception, my son listened and then peacefully fell asleep.

The next day on the way to school he recanted the dream like he was Spiderman and how he conquered the spider in his dream in some fabulous way. He had forgotten the terror of his original nightmare. He sat smiling on the way to school with confidence that he had overcome and won some imaginary battle.

This little incident stuck with me for the rest of the day. I kept thinking about how our thoughts and what we perceive is so powerful. “Life is what we perceive.” I’m sure you’ve heard that quote before, I have. If this is true, even if the facts are skewed, think magically and fantastically. Imagine the circumstances in your life, and how you wish them to be. Forget the book “The Secret.” Read Norman Vincent Peale. I know, I have referenced him before. But some things are worth repeating. This man changed my perception and instilled in me a foundation to overcome any circumstance that threatens me, so I can address issues positively. I still grapple with this one.

Have you ever heard of the “The way of the peaceful warrior?” by Dan Millman? Well, one time I went to his seminars and he made a reference that sounded patronizing to Norman V. Peale. I called him out on it in front of 200 savvy individuals in Los Angeles who all were looking “for the way to peace in their own lives” at some Learning Annex in Santa Monica.

After the seminar was over we exchanged numbers for some reason. He actually called me a week later on my home phone to still slate his views. I never called Mr. Millman back. I refuse to read any of his books now. I am just thankful for his first breakthrough book, which lead me to this discovery: Even famous authors we admire can be fallible.

Back to that ghastly spider and Halloween. After I dropped Jackson off at school, I pondered my own fears. I thought about the impact of our thoughts, and how mom and son conquered his fear together. I learned a lesson, too. I shall remember anything negative has a positive attribute lying underneath. If we look, we can discover that light will indeed always shine through the darkness. Don’t forget that this spooky Halloween season.

Around town

On Oct. 13, ABC’s “The Bachelor” choice was unveiled on “Dancing with the Stars.” Unfortunately for local residents such as me who were rooting for local “Bachelorette” contestant Kiptyn Locke, we were all sadly disappointed to hear Jake Whatshisname was nominated as the next “The Bachelor.” This might be a reason to drop this show altogether. I’m not even sure if I should watch it this season. However, I have it on good authority that Mr. Locke may have already found the lucky lady he has been looking for, so there is no need for him to be famous anymore. We wish him well. Maybe, I will nab a personal interview with the help of my insiders at the paper.

On Oct. 21, I attended my chiropractor’s health seminar on “Ten ways to boost your immune system and prevent the flu shot.” Some of the key points were “decreasing the amount of sugar and caffeine in a person’s diet to help eliminated bichemical stress and maintaining a healthy spine and nervous system through chiropractic care.” As a personal recommendation, I go in each week for more weekly adjustment from Dr. Sartin. I received a full exam and X-rays that enlighted me on why keeping your spine aligned is the key to staying healthier and feeling better. Ever since I became an avid runner again, my lower back began to cause me some unbearable pain. With my appointments with Dr. Sartin, my back pain is gone. Best of all, I feel fantastic again during my late night run in my neighborhood. Their office is located just around the corner in Solana Beach, right off of Lomas Santa Fe. To take advantage of their free consultation, call (858) 259-4130 for more information. My advice, skip the flu shot and learn how to take better care of your body.

On Oct. 22, two years had exactly passed since the Witch Creek Fire in 2007. That particular day will be one I shall never forget. And, like many of us, that week seems like a distant memory, except for all of those that lost their homes and businesses during the fire. Lemon Twist — the only business to burn down inRancho Santa Fe

— is finally being resurrected on Del Dios street across from Cielo. Katie Shull started this famous landmark flower shop/fruit-stand in the early 1980s. Lemon Twist will finally be reopened in spring of 2010. I know some incredibly happy people that will be celebrating on that momentous day. Look for the return of chocolate-dipped strawberries and a wider smile on this columnist’s face (this is my husband’s family’s business) when this landmark reopens in the spring.

Later that day, I had discovered some big ABC’s “The Bachelor” news. Molly Malaney and Jason Mesnick are officially engaged. If you recall at the beginning of the year, almost 16 million viewers tuned in on Monday night to watch Jason hand Melissa Rycroft the final rose. However, that moment became a fleeting memory as viewers watched Mr. Mesnick retract on his engagement to Ms. Rycroft, and then ask Molly for a second chance for love. It looks like love does need a bit more time to blossom than off of the airwaves of a reality show. After nine months of dating the two are headed for matrimony. When is the date? Stay tuned for more details on one of my favorite shows to gossip about on television.

On Oct. 23, my husband and I headed out on a Friday night to hang out with some of our friends at Mille Fleurs. I’m sure you’ve read before that this is one of my favorite spots in Rancho Santa Fe. Can you say, “the best looking wait staff in town, besides delicious food, fun friends and fabulous music?” I ran into a lovely couple there that night, Nancy and Carm Santoro, good friends of the Hug family. Nancy and I shared stories that night of fun trips and fabulous voyages that she has taken with Denise and Bertrand. All of the trips sounded so marvelous. This is one of the many reasons I like to go out in the Ranch, you meet the nicest people. Thanks Nancy, Carm and Julien for letting take a candid, cute photo that captured enthusiastic mood that evening.

On Oct. 24, Robin and I joined his family at the Gorwitz’s home in San Diego. This Halloween party rocked. With a private band out by the pool, the guests danced the evening away in festive Hhalloween costumes. Someone snapped a cute photo of our group from that evening. Pictured here are Ken, Katie, Juliette, Natalie, myself and Robn Shull from that fun evening. There is another photo here of Natalie Shull with her boyfriend Adam Levins. What a gorgeous couple! Thank you to Linda Gorwitz’s family for extending an invitation to the newlyweds. This is the first year I have dressed up in years for this holiday!

5332_714396810935_3419754_43025928_5653987_nTwo days before my wedding, I did all of my normal grocery shopping at Ralph’s in Del Mar. I picked up my little bag of tangerines, coffee and the rest of my list. As I stood in line, the nice checkout lady scanned my items. My mind was full of hope and dreams with just two days to go before my wedding day. I stood there daydreaming away until I noticed the cover of Time Magazine: “Unfaithfully Yours, Infidelity is eroding our most sacred institution. How to make marriage work,” by Caitlin Flanagan. My first thought was, how incredible this writer received a byline on the cover Time. My second thought (I’m highly superstitious) left me furrowing my forehead for at least five hours, leaving me with a new set of wrinkles to worry about at the end of the day.

If you are wondering, yes I did indeed “go through with it” as my many acquaintances have said repeatedly. Yes, I believe that marriage is a worthwhile institution that solidifies the love between you and your mate, while announcing to the world you are taken.

Writer Ms. Flanagan reveals in her incredible article that marriage still holds many benefits not only to those who are married, but also to society.

The reason I am writing about this is because my husband and I experienced a lot of negativity from personal friends and acquaintances regarding our trip down the isle. Just last night, someone I know in the Ranch had the audacity to come up and congratulate us and then in the same breath say, “Looks like you’ve gone and ruined a great relationship by getting married.”

I am disgusted, hurt and disillusioned by such undermining words. Yet, we are still experiencing this type of, “Wow, so you actually did it … good luck, marriage is hard work.”

Anything worth achieving is hard work. Nothing comes easy and there isn’t a perfect white picket fence in anyone’s front yard. If you want to grow as a person you must climb the ladder. You must make strides to improve and take risks that are sometimes scary.

This “forever” word has many of my peers shaking in their boots. They wonder, “Can I stay faithful, will I still like this person in ten years, will they cheat on me, what is going to happen?”

I have a secret to tell you and it’s a big one: There is no forever. We cannot predict what happens tomorrow or in 10 years no matter how much we would like to see into the future. Life is a mystery for you now to create. I like the fact that life isn’t a slam-dunk. All we can do is make decisions, and live confidently in our own choices.

I am thrilled to “go through with it.”  I took the great leap of faith because that is what real courage and commitment are about. The trend in the backlash of marriage is directly related to the changes of technology in the last 20 years. Everyone is constantly looking for the next best option, when really, love is quite simple, as my best friend Melissa Williams stated in her toast to me at my wedding.

“Unfaithfully Yours,” is a pathetic trend for those who do not have the heart to live honestly and openly. My advice to my cynical peers: grow up and find some deep commitment within your own lives and stop criticizing a pair of newlyweds that still believe in happy endings.

Around town

On June 2, at the beginning of the summer, I took the diet plunge and signed up at Medizone Weight loss Clinic in Encinitas. I had met Dr. Jonathan Hayes through mutual friends in the Ranch. He had approached me earlier this year and I had declined. With only six weeks to go, I decided to put my pride aside and commit myself to a makeover for my wedding. Can you say instant success? This was my experience immediately. In the first week I lost 10 pounds. In the second week, I lost six pounds and before the big day I lost more than 22 pounds before my wedding, bringing my inches back down to a more slender build like I had in my 20s. One major requirement — no wine with dinner. I must admit at first this was a challenge. However, after six weeks of the program I have re-evaluated my overall lifestyle and am thrilled to find a healthier approach. I am still on their program today because I am having so much fun with it and feel better than ever. I will write the end conclusion to this experience in August after my honeymoon. I still have to look fabulous in a bikini in Mexico! In the meantime, call Medizone in Encinitas at (760) 783-9200 if you have packed on some weight due to poor diet and too much pizza! Thanks, Michelle and to the gang for all of your wonderful support.

Actual Wedding Day at the San Diego Courthouse

Actual Wedding Day at the San Diego Courthouse

On July 10, my fiancé and I tied the knot in the courthouse in San Diego! While waiting for our marriage license, we decided to just go for it. I must say that day was like a wild ride. I managed to go to work, get married, meet clients, have my oil changed and shop at a Fredericks of Hollywood all in one day! I had never seen so many happy couples lining up the cheap way to tie the knot. Who said marriages were a thing of the past? I just wished we would have videotaped it. However, Robin said, “Some memories are better left to the imagination.

On July 11, the official wedding day came. Don McVay had agreed to marry us. Ken and Katie Shull hosted a wonderful reception for us in their elegant backyard garden near Lake Hodges. More than 110 guests arrived, trying to beat the heat and enjoy the drinks from the festive evening. I had to announce in my wedding dress that we had gotten married the day before. Luckily, Don’s beautiful short sermon, which consisted of some Irish prayers and beautiful scripture from the Bible smoothed over any initial shock at our announcement. Sometimes in life, you must do things your own way in order to get them done! Thanks to all of my gorgeous friends who supported our reunion that night.

On July 21, Mille Fleurs hosted a pre-opening day Race Party on their courtyard under the stars. Guests enjoyed a deejay spinning house and nu-lounge music, in addition to $6 to $9 tapas, and $6 to $8 wine by the glass. Now that is a reason for anyone to celebrate under the stars. These prices will continue during Race Track season. Take advantage of Tappas Tuesdays all during the Race Track season.

Save the dates:

On Aug. 1 and Aug. 2, John Pabst will be hosting a Party Extravaganza in The Crosby, featuring a trip giveaway to Quivira, Los Cabos, Mexico. You could win two nights and three days at the Ritz Carlton Residences. Attend this lavish bash on Aug. 1 or Aug. 2 between 1 and 5 p.m. There will also be other giveaways, which include two threesomes of golf with the builder at The Crosby. Call John Pabst for more details at (858) 484-1402 or e-mail him at John@PabstAssociates.com. I will, of course be there with my camera to catch the local celebrities around town arrive in high fashion.

On July 30 at 6 p.m., The San Diego Young Professionals Committee presents it’s fifth annual Chocolat & Vino Affair wine and Chocolate tasting at downtown’s Stingaree. This Signtature YPC event will raise funds and awareness for the nonprofit Big Brothers, Big Sisters of San Diego County. Tickets are on sale for $40 online at

www.ypcsd.com and $50 at the door. There will be a deejay and cash bar on sight. More than 13 wineries are sponsoring this event, as well as 10 restaurants.  I can’t wait to attend this event. Maybe I can break my diet to sample some fabulous wines and chocolates for this special evening.

On Aug. 23, The Country Friends big event “Hats and Flats” will be held at the San Diego Polo Club, located at 14555 El Camino Real, between Rancho Santa Fe and Del Mar.  For more information for this fabulous summer event, contact The Country Friends at (858) 756-1192 or www.thecountryfriends.org.

“Wedding Woes”

At what point in a friendship is an opinion really just ‘raining on your parade’? This has been what has been occupying my thoughts as I cruise through the windy Rancho Santa Fe roads. When does your opinion begin to hurt another? If you are wondering what triggered this initial pondering, it’s quite simply, “I am getting married this summer.” It’s funny.  You plan, you scrapbook dresses, you coordinate flower ideas, but what it really comes down to is—why one decides to get married. Why would anyone really at this day and age? Especially with the divorce rate, the fact most of the married people I know have at some point cheated and when there seems to be no rainbow of hope for romanticism in the Millennium. I hate to sound cynical, yet there it is. A touch of it exists in my veins (Don’t worry, I still believe in love).

A couple weeks back my fiancé and I had to inform both of our families that we are skipping the big wedding ceremony and just eloping. We want to just enjoy the day with our friends and loved ones at the reception without having to get into a dramatic day centered around floral arrangements, tuxedos and  the inch size of the braids maids’ strappy heels. I don’t want to be concerned about making others feel more loved because I decided to finally say “I do” one more time in my life. At a certain point, we must take the selfish path and do what our heart would rather do. If you really want to know the truth, I would be  thrilled to get married in the little town of Julian in this cottage style chapel nestled next to rolling green fields and fences. Well, my fiancé does not want that. He does not see himself eating apple pie or hanging out in a town that reminds him of ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ That sounds wonderful to me. I guess you know you are in love with a man and they just want to go to the courthouse and your fine with nixing the hula hoop dress. And that is exactly why one should marry—for love.

You find out a lot about yourself and your friends when you begin to plan such an occasion…like their opinions of you and your relationship. I’m a rather nice person to a fault. However, at this moment I want to share with you my utter disdain for ‘opinions’ that threaten anyone’s little piece of happiness. I’m sure you’ve experienced this yourself. You have something amazing taking place in your life and someone you really care about interjects some dark cloud over that moment. It’s hard for me to even comprehend my closest friends still asking me “Are you sure you are making the right decision?” when my wedding day is less than three months away. I am perplexed by the boldness of these statements and hurt by the lack of delivery when voicing concern.

As you might have guessed, there is a reason why we are opting to elope this summer over the traditional wedding ceremony. There is a reason why I do not feel guilty when I explain to my father that it’s unnecessary to get married in the eyes of God. At some point, one must set aside what everyone else wants your life to be and you have to have the courage to be shall I dare say it…Selfish.

One of my favorite quotes ever is from HARVEY starring Jimmy Stewart. It goes something like this; “Sometimes it better to be pleasant than to be right.” Machel’s thoughts—have a heart and think before you give out your opinion. You may be tarnishing a friend’s dream.

Around Town

On April 8th, Rancho Santa Fe students were out for spring break! If you weren’t out of town, you were sure to be found near the beach. This exact day happens to hold special meaning. My son, turned nine years old that day. So what better way to celebrate than hanging out near the white surf at Del Mar beach? I found many other families there enjoying the windswept sunny day. My girlfriend, Meredith MacDonald snapped this gorgeous photo, which embodies the innocence of youth. Atiana Kam Smith, Reese MacDonald, and Chloe Temple beam with happiness on one of my favorite days of the year. You know what they say, ‘Girls just want to have fun’.

On April 12th, the Easter bunny finally came. I celebrated this wonderful day by attending St. Peter’s church in Del Mar. They service filled me with a sense of hope and inspiration. Afterwords, there was fabulous tea and cookies in the courtyard, which has the most amazing view of the ocean. I enjoyed a few deviled eggs, some sweets and the warmest smiles from the patrons that attend church there. Later that day, after the egg coloring was over, a few of my closest friends stopped by and share their love and support. Jill Drouin and Melissa Williams look fabulous on this Easter Sunday. What more can you ask for than friends and loved ones on Easter Sunday?

On April 14th, the day before Tax day, I met my friends out on Tapas Tuesdays at Mille Fleurs. Who said Tuesdays aren’t any fun? Take it from me, this is one of my favorite days of the week. My group of friends started out at Delicias, and then met me there for some wonderful disco music. I know some have this image of the Ranch as a ‘sleepy town’, but not in my circle of friends. I ran into Marko Dedic enjoying the company of two lovely ladies, Krista Lafferty and Slavena Paskova. Can you believe it, chess and fine dining? A few others I ran into were Daniel Bunn, Janice Jaraicie, Bianca Smith and Denny Fallon,  just to name a few. There were also some guests staying at the Inn that ventured inside to discover the party like fever. I’m sure they weren’t expecting to find so much excitement on a Tuesday out in the Ranch.

On April 15th, I attended the Shangri Pa meeting at Helen Woodward. Mark your calendar for June 6th, for one of my favorite events of the year in Rancho Santa Fe. This night is will be filled with red carpet moments, fabulous food, dancing and a chance to bid on silent and live auction items. All of the proceeds raised for this evening will go to saving the lives of thousands of animals in need. For the last six months, Laurel and Katie McCrink, Elizabeth Davidson, Carrington Kingsley, Michelle Pessah featured have been donating their time and effort to this wonderful charity event. If you are interested in attending Shangri Pa or would like to contribute to the silent or live auction, check out Helen Woodward website for more details on how you, too, can save an animal’s life, www.animalcenter.org.

On April 16th, after dropping my son off at school, I found the Rancho Santa Fe Fire District out in full force collecting donations for a summer camp for children that were burn victims. I immediately pulled over and spoke to one of the men. Craig McVey informed me that their district raises the more money than any other department.  On this one day, these firefighters raise almost $30,000 dollars for these children to enjoy a wonderful summer camp. If you are wondering how they collect that much money, it’s with a fire boot in hand and a warm smile. Mr. McVey told me they do this once a year and it’s always a wonderful success. Cheers to all of the residents in the Ranch and surrounding communities that donate for this charity.

Coming up in my next column: Want to lose weight for those sexy summer outfits? I will be profiling Ranch Resident Julien Godfrey with his own personal weight loss success story. Mr. Godfrey has been working with Dr. Jonathan M. Haynes, M.D., the medical director of Medi-Zone, which is located in nearby Encinitas. Stay tuned! If you are interested in finding out more about their services before then, feel free to call at (760) 783-9200.

Hollywood meet the Ranch, plus Does money buy happiness?

  • Posted on April 9, 2009 at 3:16 am

Hollywood meets Machel\'s Ranch at THe Inn in Rancho Santa FeKenny Davis from Hollywood, with Rancho Santa Fe Resident, Robin Shull, my fiance.

“Does money buy you happiness?”

We live in a town where the trees shed their leaves four times and then they die.  The roots do not find the earth inward, only underneath the shallowness of the grass directly below. When the Santa Ana’s blow forth bringing dry weather and hot winds, I begin to wonder about the weather, eucalyptus trees, and the saneness of people in Southern California

This weekend someone I overheard someone say, “Money can buy you happiness.”  This statement was made, while this person was a guest a fantastic home in Rancho Pacifica.  I had one of those moments, which inspired me to contemplate this proverbial theory that so many believed to be true.  One of my favorite authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald fictionalized why this statement is so desperately wrong. The classic novel, “The Great Gatsby”, delves into the lives of the rich in famous during the roaring 1920′s era.

Let me give you a quick re-cap of this classic novel, which I’m sure you read in high school: GATSBY fell in love with Daisy.  Daisy was rich and came from money. Gatsby did not.  With enough effort and shady connections, he found away to make money to win Daisy’s love.  Gatsby plotted and planned and even hosted elaborate parties on Long Island’s North Shore.  In the end, he was just a ‘bootlegger’ and Daisy was unattainable.  Do you remember the ending? Gatsby loved Daisy so much he covered up a hit and run accident, which resulted in the death of Daisy’s husband’s lover, while she exited town unscathed by any scandal. Meanwhile, Gatsby was murdered for her mistake…I’m sure when Gatsby set out on his whole “Let’s win back Daisy scheme”  he had no idea that his demise would come from his mission to find great happiness while hording lots of cash just to garner Daisy’s attention. In truly analyzing this book, the point was that Gatsby’s love was pure in some sweet honorable way. Gatsby lacked selfish motives, other than to get the girl in the end. That is what made the story fabulous. True love can be flawed, too.  So…who says money can’t buy you happiness?  Well, F. Scott Fitzgerald.  A very wealthy man himself, he fictionalized this universal theme in most of his novels. Look to the great minds to find great pearls of wisdom.

They say at a funeral you can judge a person’s life by attendance of friends and loved ones. At Gatsby’s memorial, there were only two individuals there. What happened to all of the fair weather friends and his love, Daisy? In this classic novel is the answer to why this theory, “Money can buy you happiness” doesn’t even measure up in the Millennium.

During a time when money seems more elusive than even a few years ago, we must remember the tale of Gatsby. We must remember that just because someone else has more than us, does not always correlate with happiness. Happiness is a fleeting emotion that cannot be bought in a store or in a form of a hand bag. We must remember to find peace of mind in our own hearts. Now more than ever, when we analyze what others have behind their white picket fences, it may seem that the elegant landscaped lawns set against the transported eucalyptus trees, that money could be the answer to solving your worries. Just know that in the end, we are remembered by our friends and by those lives we’ve touched—not what we have in our bank account. After all, “You can’t take it with you”. Oops, now that’s a famous Frank Capra movie. I do believe I mixing the genres…

Around Town

On March 21st, Rancho Santa Fe Little League celebrated Opening Day at Richard’s field. Family and teammates attended this fun-filled tradition of one of the best leagues in North County. Professional Baseball pitcher, Jim Abbot inpired the crowd with his own inspirational story of how he became a majoy league player, while overcome the fact he was born without a right hand. Abbot’s accolade’s include the Sullivan award in 1987 and throwing a no-hitter with the Yankees against Cleveland. He played 10 years in the majors with four different clubs. Ben Stout, John Scheckengaust, and Tyler Miller beamed with pride when they stood next to Mr. Abbot. Thank-you to Todd Stout, my son’s baseball coach for sharing his pictures in my column. Now can you say…play ball!

On March 22nd, I met an out-of-towner, designer–Kenny Davis, walking around in downtown Rancho Santa Fe. Mr. Davis was with his sister, Shauna Aronson seeking design inspiration from the Tuscany homes in the Ranch for set decorations in Hollywood. Kenny Davis has designed with such celebrities as Paris Hilton, P Diddy, Fifty-Cents, plus designed numoruous television shows. How thrilled I was to hang out with a designer from Los Angeles. He informed me that a Reality Design Show is in the works right now, which would feature his creations from Hamptons, Los Angeles, and New York City. Watch out Martha Stewart, it looks like you have some new competition. He is giving me the exclusive scoop on what’s next in his exciting career, until then, stay tuned.

On March 27th, I heard from Rancho Realtor, Debi Holder. Her son, Andrew Holder, a recent graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasedena-celebrated a showing of his artwork in downtown little Italy. Debi’s son has built up a steady clientele, which includes the Roxy, Poketo, National Geographic, and Arkitrip Magazine. “His work has a hint of Scandinavian folk-art with a modern-day twist,” according to Debi. Imagine Sleepy seaside towns, and country landscapes…these are his prominent pieces. If you would like to find out more about this local budding artist, go to www.andrewholder.net for more information on his artwork.

Later that evening, I ran into a fun group celebrating a new business merger. The owner of “A Better Way Wholesale Auto”, Brian Lee was in the Ranch with friends, Camille Stewart, Wendy Deno and Mike Fascetti. In a time when speculation about the car business is sour, Brian has already had great success with his new dealership located in Miramar. Originally from Connecticut, he recently relocated with his family to Southern California. I wonder if it had anything to do with our glorious weather?  If you are looking for a ‘slightly used luxury car’, check out www.abwwa.com or call   858…  .

On March 28th, Lisa Saputo organized a wonderful event at the Del Rayo Shopping Center called, “Lifestyles in the Ranch” Talk live, featuring KUSI’s Leonard Simpson.  This event incorporated retailers and restaurants, promoting all of the stores in Fairbanks. The highlights included an interactive fashion show, featuring complimentary makeovers, style tips, fitness and food, with live models on stage. Proceeds raised from the raffle drawing were donated to “Child-help” at  Rady’s Children’s Hospital, and the Center for Children. Kudos to Lisa Saputo for organizing a way to promote our local businesses in town that might need that extra boost and most importantly raising money for children’s charities.  What you may not know about Lisa is that she is good friend’s with Melissa Williams and is available to help your organization. Call Lisa at   619…   if you would like her to promote an upcoming event.

SAVE THE DATE  Coming up is the fabulous Celebrity Classics Golf Tournament April 23-26 located at Morgan Rung Golf Resort. If you love meeting your favorite Sport Celebrities, this will be your chance to meet them. NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB sports stars, as well as stars from television, music and movie stars will be in town this weekend. This is one of my favorite events of the year. Back in 2002 I was lucky enough to play golf with these guys and have a weekend to always remember. Don’t miss this big event. For more information check out www.ismsports.net.

Specials All over Town in Rancho Santa Fe

Okay, we know we are in a recession. What I want to know is what are you personally doing to support the economy for our local businesses? If you are like me, you too, have felt the crunch on your wallet. You may be staying in and avoiding eating out and making more dinners at home. You may even be scaling back on your grocery bill in ways you never knew were possible to save. I have never been a ‘coupon cutter’, however, don’t be surprised if you see a few tucked inside my purse these days. Don’t be surprised if you see me checking out the specials in the grocery aisles with intense concentration on which bargain can maximize my dollar to its fullest.

With my own habits changing over the last six months, I began to wonder how the local restaurants are in Rancho Santa Fe are combating this down economy in 2009. What I found out is there are many opportunities to save money with ‘specials’ being offered all over town.

My first stop—Mille Fleurs. Marko Dedic, a manager, was quite informative of one of their newest offerings for residents to enjoy. I’m sure you have heard of Bistro night on Wednesdays, but what about Tapas nights on Tuesdays? Starting this month at 7:30 p.m., you can enjoy ‘finger foods’ off a separate menu for a fraction of the price of their standard dinner entrees. According to Marko, this will be an evening to enjoy mid week: “We will be playing European House lounge music in the background, while friends and family can mingle in the dining area enjoying our newest hot night out. We also have a wonderful selection of wine by the glasses to compliment Tapas Tuesdays.” When I arrived on March 17th, the restaurant was already overflowing from word of mouth networking for their first big evening. I must admit, this has always been my favorite evening out. Now I have more reason to celebrate, fabulous food at an economical price. Please don’t let me persuade you not to enjoy their regular menu. With Chef Martin Woesle’s fantastic entrée’s and Bertrand Hug’s charming manner, this dynamic duo has landed them in the coveted spot listed in the top 25 restaurants in America.

Down the street, Delicias Restaurant has undergone some management changes recently, when Tyler Williams came aboard.  I must say I can already see a positive change in the atmosphere at one of the other hottest places in town. With their ‘hamburger night’ on Thursdays, this is another reason to avoid cooking dinner and dealing with dirty dishes.  Their price is affordable and a fun. Did you know you can also enjoy cold draft beer on tap?  Delicias has Coorslight, Blue Moon Belgium Ale and Firestone DBA available to residents that don’t feel like driving out of their comfort zone. One of their other specials is a ‘poached rack of lamb’ which is a favorite’s, according to Tyler.

My third stop was to the newest of upscale restaurants added to the Ranch: Decanter located in the beautiful shopping center in Cielo.  Jayson Knack, the owner informed me that their attendance in their first five weeks of business has been very impressive. With steak tartar as an appetizer and fresh scallops and risotto, you can eat luxuriously, while enjoying the beautiful view of the mountains. They also boast a wine flight featuring five California wines for a nominal price.  Are you a light night eater? Decanter serves a full menu until 10:00 p.m. and a limited menu until 11:00 p.m. Check out this hottest edition to fabulous reasons to support the local restaurants in town. Be wise, but don’t be a fool by living your life in fear when what your local community needs most is your support.

Around Town

On March 10th, I made it down to Mille Fleurs to hang out with fashion designer Janice Jaraicie. We celebrated her fashion spread coming out in 944 Magazine. Janice is the designer of Nelli brand, which Rancho residents can find at the Bridges Boutique.  She was recently featured in San Diego Magazine as one of the first and foremost designers in San Diego County. My good friend and Janice’s best friend Julien Hug was there to celebrate her new feature, which was shot at Mille Fleurs restaurant as her back drop for her fashion designs. Jill Drouin, myself were there to celebrate her new found celebrity in San Diego.  Stay tuned with what’s next on this hot fashion designer, we’re lucky enough to call our own!

On March 13th, I found some gorgeous women celebrating life downtown in Rancho Santa Fe. I ran into Karian Forsyth, Terri Nichols and Sacha Boutros enjoying the night life, even though it was Friday the Thirteenth. By the smiles on their faces, it doesn’t look like these women are superstitious at all. Kariane, informed me that her business is thriving during the down economy—The Right One. Rumors have it that she recently turned down a reality show on Bravo just to keep her integrity of her business and clients. Now that is what I call a ‘real class act in the Ranch’. If you would like to find out more details on how you can find your love match, check out www.therightone.com. If I wasn’t already getting married this summer, you can bet I would be her first and foremost client.

On March 14th, Patricia Savarese shared some wonderful news about a fashion boutique located just around the corner in Solana Beach, located right across the street from Fidel’s restaurant. With over 20 years of experience, Lili Zafar has opened Lilipeach House of Fashion. All items are guaranteed for uniqueness, fabric quality and durability. Every Monday through Wednesday, Lilipeach will be hosting an open house at the store from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. On Thursdays they will be serving drinks and appetizers. You may call to make an appointment or simply stop in. Lili would love to see you there! Thanks Pat, for letting me share this information in my column. The store is located at 742 Genevieve Street, Suite G, Solana Beach;     858-449-5539    .

On March 16th, local resident and sought after realtor informed me of some hot news going on in Indian Wells. Shannon was in the desert with her client, Jelena Jankovic, tennis pro. Thanks to Shannon, Ms. Jankovic has re-located to Rancho Santa Fe recently. Shannon and Jankovic are ‘sunning, exercising and training for the next tournament in Florida next week. Ms. Jankovic’s permit just went through and will be breaking ground soon. I will be one of the few that will get to see the architect plans on this celebrity’s dream home! For more information on this story, check out Shannon’s personal website: www.shannonbiszantz.com and look under “community blog” for more juicy details on this hot story. Thank for sharing your picture Shannon.

On March 19th, Tom Billick, owner of Cardiff Classics invited me down to his dealership to check out his latest inventory. Last year, Tom donated one of his luxury sport cars to Rady’s Children’s hospital. This year, he is donating the use of one of these speed demons to The Del  Mar Horse show. His business has been around for almost twenty years. Married to another business owner in North County, Betty Jo, they are one of the few married couples in this area two manage and operate two separate businesses. Talk about rock star material. What you may not know is that Cardiff Classics specializes in consignment and locating any kind of car for his clients. If you don’t have time to visit a dealer, let Tom do all of the ‘leg work’ in buying a car. Ask me, I know. After recently buying a car myself, I hope the next time around I can go to Cardiff Classics and ask Tom for his help. He also specializes in European and Sport Cars. For more information, check out www.cardiffclassics.com . Thanks for the fabulous scoop Tom.

Around Town Fourth of July in Rancho Santa Fe

  • Posted on July 6, 2008 at 2:31 am

Well, I must say after going to the parade only a few years ago and watching it develop into such a fabulous event, like that small town middle-America feel I was quite impressed. With well over 5000 people in town, camping out with their umbrella for the all day barbeque just down from the Inn, I fetl utterly prowd to be an American, but more so to live in such a wonderful community. Kudos to all of those in town in Rancho Santa Fe who made such a gallant effort to make the event amazing. I shall make sure next year I bring my own umbrella and stay for the day. Who needs the beach in Rancho Santa Fe? Around Town, Machel Penn
